How
to start a Pineapple Farming in Nigeria
Pineapple trading is one of Nigeria's investment opportunities.
It is a profitable business that yields high profits when
invested in. You must consider the best time to plant them in
order for it to be managed properly. Pests and diseases are
rarely a problem for pineapples.
Pineapples are high and fast yielding commodity with quick
returns on investment. Its’s high demand makes it very
profitable venture for investors looking to invest in a fast
ripple agricultural venture.
Pineapple is a highly juiced product and only those who
understand it’s unique nature will reap bountiful gain
cultivating it.
Nigeria, with its vast expanse of arable land and favorable
weather, has nine states that are primary pineapple producers.
Our country is Africa's largest producer of pineapple. The
seventh largest in the world, after Costa Rica, Brazil, the
Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and India.
Varieties of Pineapple in Nigeria: There are over 37 different
types of pineapples grown around the world. The types differ in
size, shape, color, and other characteristics.
However, only two of them are commonly used in Nigeria
the; smooth leaf (cayenne) and the gold crown (yellow). The gold
crown cultivar is a newly developed cultivar with improved
qualities.
Soil fertility: Because pineapple can absorb nutrients through
the aerial parts of the plant, there is no immediate reliance on
soil fertility. Poor fertility soils can be used for pineapple
cropping, though it is not ideal. In the case of poor fertile
soils, the farmer must plan to apply fertilizer, such as organic
manure before planting.
Pineapple rooting depth ranges from 15-30cm for the majority of
the root mass, but soil depth should be at least 500m.
Plough the land and leave it for 10-12 days before making
ridges. During this time, the farmland is exposed to sunlight,
which kills any parasites or insects that may be harmful to the
plant. Make sure the site has good topography to avoid
waterlogging and erosion. Planting on ridges is recommended.
Planting on flat ground is a bad idea.
Planting season for pineapples: Planting a pineapple sucker or
crown is best done 6 to 8 weeks after harvest. During this time,
moisture evaporates. This is also the time to use acetylene or
smoke on the sucker. The species chosen is heavily influenced by
information about which species sells best in a given area.
Spacing: The pineapple plant requires 30x60cm of space. The
distance between rows can be as much as two (2) meters. Before
planting, the pineapple sucker should be at least 20cm tall.
Weed Control : Apply a weed chemical immediately after planting
to prevent weed growth. To avoid nutrient competition between
the pineapple plant and the weed, keep weeding on the pineapple
farm for the first four months after planting. It should be done
three to four times prior to harvest. It can be done with
chemicals (Atrazine and diuron) or by laborers uprooting the
plants.
Maturity: Each pineapple mode of propagation has a different
maturity period. The sucker propagated pineapple plant has the
shortest maturity time of nine (9) months. The crown and seed
pineapple propagation modes are both longer. Pineapple plants
are artificially induced at this stage.
Artificial induction is the process of causing a mature plant to
transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage of
growth. The act of forcing a plant to produce flowers. It is
done by a professional to prevent over-fruiting and to allow
fruit production during the off-season.
Harvesting: Sucker propagated pineapple plants can be harvested
in 13-14 months, while crown propagated plants can be harvested
in 19-20 months.
Pattern
of Demand and Supply : I would like to inform you that there is
a significant gap in the pineapple business value chain. Take it
from me: the market exists, but supply has never been sufficient
to meet demand. In our beloved Nigeria, pineapple is mostly
consumed fresh. Within the country, there is a high and growing
demand for pineapple products. Because Nigeria is still a
developing country, the majority of total output is sold and
purchased in the domestic market. The fruit juice market has
also grown dramatically over time. Not only that, but this
growth is on a downward spiral due to rising demand and those
who capitalize on opportunities and help bridge the gap in its
value chain.
Profitability
and Yield: Pineapple fruits are harvested every 3-4 months.
Profit is so certain because it accumulates at continuous fruit
harvests. Pineapple provides a consistent and stable source of
income. You are no longer required to wait. The time has come to
begin pineapple farming in Nigeria.
Pineapple is in high demand for domestic consumption, industrial
use in the production of fruit juice, and as an export commodity
to countries such as the United States, Canada, and Europe,
among others. Thus, using very little capital and the most
recent scientific discoveries, you can plant, cause the entire
farm to bear fruit at the same time, ripen at the same time,
harvest, and sell the entire farm in one day, within a year.
This will undoubtedly provide you with the financial blessing
you seek throughout the year.
Once again, if you’re looking for a farming business to venture
into, the pineapple farming business in Nigeria is a great
option to explore.
