How to set up a lucrative football
viewing center in Nigeria
Football is not doubt the biggest, most popular and most loved
game in the world. Football fans always look for a way to
connect to the various clubs or countries they support. Most of
them will go to any length so that they don’t miss any of their
club’s matches.
Football viewing centers can be categorized under sports and
entertainment industry. A football viewing center is a place
where live football matches is shown and football lovers pay a
fee ranging from 60 naira to 200 naira to watch a match.
Football stadiums where matches are played cannot accommodate
the many fans that the popular game has. There are millions of
fans from Africa, Europe, Asia, North and South America who
would love to watch matches live but they can’t because even the
largest stadium in the world can only accommodate about 90,000
of them. So there is need for fans to look for other means to
watch these matches so that they wouldn’t miss out.
Every
business requires strategic planning. Before you set out in this
business, you have to have the right mindset and understand that
you are not in for jokes. You have to come to terms with the
fact that you are starting a business that has the potential to
grow.
During the weekends, there are always a lot of matches; there
are also midweek matches, although not every week. The cost of
viewing a match in most places in Nigeria is low, most times its
N100. Imagine if you start this business and your viewing centre
is sufficiently spacious enough to accommodate 100 people, you
will stand to make roughly N10, 000 per match.
In situations where there are matches at various time, say;
Arsenal vs. Chelsea 1 pm, Man united vs. Liverpool 4 pm,
Barcelona vs. Real Madrid 9 pm. That will mean a sum of N10, 000
multiply by 3 = N 30,000 on a single day. Isn’t that a good
small scale business?
Cost
of Setting Up Football Viewing Centre:
Flat Screen – 50k x 3 = 150,000 naira, Decoder – 40,000 x3 =
120k naira
(Excluding Subscriptions). See DStv subscription for viewing
centres.
Furniture – 50 – 100,000, Shop or Space – 150,000 – 300,000
(Depending on location)
Please note that all the prices quoted here are subject to
change with the inflation rate in Nigeria skyrocketing.
These are a list of other stuff you can also do to make extra
income apart from just showing football:
BETTING:
You can set up a betting shop right inside, or outside your
viewing center, it will help you earn more money.
FOODS
& DRINKS: You should sell food and drinks, it can serve as a
form of entertaining them while they watch the matches.
GAMES:
Whenever there is no football match to show, you can use your
viewing center as a gaming house for popular ones like FIFA and
PES.
SHOW
MOVIES: When those popular clubs go on break, especially after a
full season, will you just be looking and cleaning cobwebs in
your viewing centre? My brother, better convert your viewing
center to a mini cinema for the time being. You can't charge as
standard cinemas do, hope you know that?
Location:
This is the most important thing in setting up a football
viewing center. It is best located in busy and residential
areas. The location should be safe from any hazard, crime, high
tension cable, etc. Also, a football viewing center can also be
situated in developing or underdeveloped areas, and higher
institutions where the majority of football lovers are without a
cable network TV. Your location determines how much profit you
will make. A location where the prospective audiences can access
easily will ensure you have a steady stream of customers.
Marketing:
As soon as the viewing center is ready, create awareness
by telling your neighbors and friends first. Erect sign post in
strategic areas within your environs so people from far and wide
can be informed about the business. At inception, you can offer
free viewing for about two days and ensure to provide your best
service. It is a way to get people to try your service and if
they like your service, they will surely return.
In addition, make sure your prices are competitive enough. They
shouldn’t be too high so you don’t lose customers and should not
be too low either so you don’t run at a loss. For instance, in
some localities, viewing centers charge between 50 – 200 naira
per match. So, do your research and price yourself accordingly.
