How to package programmers for television and how to contact the advertising agencies

Television broadcasting dates back to the launch of western Nigerian Television in 1959.The Decree 24 of May 1977 which gave birth to the Nigerian Television Authority NTA) was promulgated in March I 977and took effect retrospectively from 1976.

By that decree, the Authority became the only body empowered to undertake television broadcasting in Nigeria. Therefore all the ten existing State television stations were incorporated into NTA. Currently Nigeria has about 140 television stations

Overtime Technology has aided us in reaching out to more people either in our immediate environment or across the border.  There are different types of programme on our Television; there are current affairs issues that are news oriented, programmes that are critically frictional, there are sports programme, Automobile, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Shoppers Guide, Maritime Television, Politics, Aviation, Finance, Insurance, Cultural dances, Personality Profile, Educational Programmes, Musicals, Fashions, Construction, Oil Industry, Religion, Hospitality and Tourism, Real Estate, Dating Game Show, Agriculture, Women Empowerment Programmes,, School Quiz Competition,  Teenage Programmes and so on.

It takes the same process to package this programmes for Television Production. Basically every programme must have a concept, an objective, or an idea. As a young professional, depending on your background, it is imperative to tailor your programme towards your professional background, orientation and finally interest. Irrespective of the different types of programmes we have the methodology for packaging this progarmmes for Television are similar.

arrow yellowPackaging a programme for Television Production is divided into three stages; they are Pre-production, Production and post-production.

PRE-PRODUCTION: The first step is for you to have an idea; the second step is having a script for shooting or packaging the programmes. The script will give you the idea of what you want to do, it is the script that will give you the format and structure of the programme, for instance, the script will contain (1) The number of presenters the programme is going to have (2) Is the going to be a live programme or a recorded programme? (3) Will the Programme include interviews or Musicals? (4)Will the programme  carry commercials, what type of commercials, would there be any backdrop (5) is it a collaborative arrangement with the station or you have an independent sponsors who are going to finance the project? These are what you are going to work on at this stage of fine-tuning your programme  .It is also important for you to make a budget. Making a budget is a function of how much you have and how much you are willing to spend; it is also about identifying your concept and knowing how much it will cost.

PRODUCTION STAGE: This is the stage when you will go out to do the Recording. This is the time when you have to transport all the members of your production crew especially if you have to travel out of the Television Stations. Recording will start. You can also request for the assistance of any production studio that have their in house directors and crew members and equipment another option is seeking for the assistance of a consultant or an advertising agencies You must make sure that everything is near perfection even if you have to do the recording over and over again.

POST PRODUCTION STAGE: This is the editing stage, this is when you will go to the studio and edit, this means going through and cutting down what have been recorded. If you have an interview programme that lasted for one hour for a thirty programme, it is during the editing stage that you will select the most important part of that interview to cut the interview back to thirty minutes. It is at this editing stage that you will lay the music, display the name of the person you interviewed on the screen; you will also display the names of other members of the production crew at the end of the programme. Sometimes if you have a very good progammes, Television Stations are ready to give you free air time pending the time the sponsors will come in, the fact remain that, if it is a good programme sponsor will always come.

It is imperative that you identify the Purpose of the Production. The most important step is the first one: clearly identify the goals and purposes of the production. If there is no clear agreement on the goal or purpose of a production, it will be impossible to evaluate success. Is the purpose to instruct, inform, entertain, or possibly to generate feelings of pride, or social, religious or political need? Possibly the real purpose of the production is to create a desire in the audience to take some action. And, let's be honest, the primary goal of most broadcasting is simply to hold the interest of an audience so they will be influenced by the commercials, so, most productions have more than one goal.

arrow yellowWriting a Proposal: Your proposal must be in line with the Target group of the Brand, you need to indicate the reach of the programme, and you also need to indicate your primary viewers and their age range. Coca-Cola for instance has a primary target, which is the youth while the primary target of Peugeot Automobile is the Adult. You must also highlight the coverage area, is the programme limited to a particular state or it covers only the western part of the country or it cover the whole federation. The client must also know the Television station you are using so that the population of the people viewing the programme could be easily assessed. It is very important to also let the agency know if there is going to be a backdrop that will carry the name and logo of the organization or the presenter is going to put on a T-Shirt and Cap that will carry the name and logo of the company

arrow yellowWhat the Agency/Corporate Organisation looks for before they sponsor your programme:

They will like to see the dub of that programme; if it’s a programme you have been running on the Television, they will like to assess the standard of that programme. Clients will also like to know what the programme is all about especially as regards meeting the standard of the programme they are promoting

Who present? This involves not only money but brand’s reputation, Proposal for sponsorship should be presented by the most qualified person from the organization Clients and advertising agencies tends to take the CEO or the Marketing manager of a Production company very serious because their presentation portrays how serious they are in presenting the programme; infarct a valuable decision can be reached the same day.

If your proposal is rejected what is next? Try and find out why it was rejected, it might be rejected not because it is a bad idea, it might be rejected because of their commitment to other producers, and so you might be directed to come back at a particular date.  If it is rejected because of the quality of the proposal, the person rejecting it has to give you a clue on how to correct your mistake, you now go back and make your research, seek opinion from expert before you repackage you programme.

What are you waiting for, the time to start is now, this is a special invitation to the Nigeria multibillion naira Television industry.
