How to export Sesame seed from Nigeria
Sesame seeds are produced in large quantities in Northern parts
of Nigeria, with two annual harvest seasons (August and
October). This is because its plant is drought-resistant, such
that excessive rainfall can have an adverse effect on its
productivity. It is common knowledge that Northern Nigeria is
characterized by moderate to low rainfall with high temperatures
– making the area a thriving place for producing sesame seeds.
Nigeria is the largest producer of sesame seeds in Africa, and
the third largest in the world, with about five hundred and
eighty thousand (580,000) tonnes produced in 2017. Ninety
percent (90%) of sesame seeds produced in Nigeria are exported.
The international demand for sesame (beniseed) is rising every
year. Currently, it is over one million tons per year, and it is
worth about $850 million (about N136 billion). The world trade
in sesame has increased by about 80 percent in the last 15 years
as countries in Asia, Europe and America are importing more
sesame seeds than they grow.
Based on their colour difference, sesame seed in Nigeria can be
classified into two (2) types namely the white/raw and
black/mixed.
The white varieties are usually regarded as the food grade and
used in the bakery industry while the black varieties are
referred to as oil grade and used in the production of sesame
oil.
The White (Food Grade) seed is grown around the towns of Keffi,
Lafia/Makurdi, Doma, and in Nassarawa, Taraba, and Benue States.
The demand market for sesame seed can be classified into two (2)
broad groups namely that who import because of the high-quality
oil extractable from the seed and those who buy for non-oil use.
Oil based importers are mostly in Asia and includes countries
like Japan and Korea. The national requirement for sesame seed
in Japan is estimated at over two hundred thousand (200,000) MT.
With national requirement of over sixty thousand (60,000) MT the
US market is mixture of oil and non-oil market.
Some of the factors that influence the popularity of sesame
seeds are that they are a good source of vegetable oil that is
free of cholesterol – making this agricultural product a
vegetable oil of high demand across the world. These seeds are
also important in the agricultural agrarian export landscape.
The country is one of the world’s largest producers of sesame
seeds.
Types Of Sesame Seeds Exported From Nigeria
Sesame seeds have two significant variants in Nigeria – White
Sesame seeds in the Middle Belt, especially Benue State, and
Golden Sesame seeds in Kano and Jigawa States.
Hulled Sesame Seeds: These are seeds that their exterior
covering, called hull or husk, removed. They have a milder
flavor that is nurture and a bit less bitter.
Unhulled Sesame Seeds: These are seeds with hulls. Unhulled
sesame seeds are considered to have their hulls naturally
intact. They have a bitter flavor with a nuttier texture.
A direct purchase of sesame seeds from an agro-export company
can reduce the stress of sourcing for the produce in Nigeria.
But it is important to note certain things when using an export
company in the country. There are requirements that must be met
to make your export seamless, which include;
Registration of the export company with the Corporate Affairs
Commission (CAC)
Registration of the export company with the Nigerian Export
Promotion Council (NEPC)
A domiciliary account to receive international payments
Bill of lading, Phytosanitary Certificate, Certificate of
origin, Fumigation Certificate, Inspection Certificate
Shipping & Delivery Terms Of Sesame Seeds
It is important to consider some factors when shipping sesame
seeds from Nigeria to any destination country.
1. Cost Of Delivery
Shipping a large volume of sesame seeds can be best achieved
with sea freight as it is cheaper than air freight. An increased
volume often makes the delivery cost via air freight 5-7 times
higher than sea freight.
2. Time Of Delivery
Air freight is considered to be faster in delivery than sea
freight. Therefore, the shipping method can depend on how
quickly buyers want the delivery from Nigeria. That is why some
buyers prefer the delivery time over the cost.
Price: The local
price of sesame seed between N1.5M to N1.9M per ton while buyers
pay N1,800 ton 2000
USD per ton (FOB). Profit on Investment is between 30 to 40%
