Grasscutter farming in Nigeria is just one of one of the most
lucrative type of businesses in the animal farming area. It is
likewise among one of the most lucrative animal husbandry
businesses in Nigeria. If you take the grasscutter farming
business serious, you can make as much as N5 million naira
yearly from the business.
There is,
however, no blanket recipe for success, as production protocols
differ according to the breed of grasscutter chosen, the type of
housing used, the production aim, and the climatic conditions.
Cost of
Breeding and Production
The average
grasscutter farmer would certainly invest a bit over 85,000
Naira to see to the overall production procedure for a small-
average scale grasscutter farm. The average price for a mature
buck is 12,000 naira and that of a doe is in between
14,000-15,000 naira. The price of a served doe varies from
18,000-20,000 Naira. The cost of feeding monthly has to do with
N230 for every grasscutter. When you consider the cost of their
medical maintenance, the overall startup cost should cost
nothing more than N85,000 for the average grasscutter farm
A fully
grown female grasscutter after gestation, carries the pregnancy
for 140 – 150 days and delivers about twice a year. Each
pregnancy produces an average of four to seven young. Sometimes
up to 10. This means one female grasscutter could produce 8 – 20
young in a year. After five to six months, fully mature ones can
cost up to N5,000 each.
As at the time of writing this post, a colony of grasscutter
(weaners) is worth around 100K. That means if you have 10
colonies of weaners for sale you have a potential N1,000,000
sitting in your farm. If they were adult colonies and you're
selling them at N180,000 per colony that will be N1,800,000.
More breeding stocks for sale means more money for your
business.
Grasscutter meat has no religious, culture or political bias.
Its a kind of meat that is eaten and accepted by most people.
They are served at bush-bars, hotels, restaurants, weddings,
naming ceremonies, title ceremonies etc. Farmers sell them in
live weights of between 2K & 4K per KG.
Some characteristics of grasscutters are:
1. Grascutters
are placid and relatively prolific animal
2. They
become sexually active and mature at 5-6 months. At this age,
they can reproduce and give birth to as high as 12 young.
3. They
can be easily reared or managed, and this made their
domestication an alternative to poaching them in the wild.
4. They
can grow rapidly in intensive conditions
5. The
meat of grasscutters is very rich in protein and economically
valuable
