How to start Liquid Glucose Syrup Production From Cassava Tubers
in Nigeria
Glucose Syrup is an important sweetener in the food,
confectionery and pharmaceutical industries. Currently, local
production cannot meet the demand, hence, the local requirement
is being met through importation.
Cassava is the third largest source of food carbohydrates in the
tropics, after rice and maize.Cassava is a major staple food in
the developing world, providing a basic diet for over half a
billion people. It is one of the most drought tolerant crops,
capable of growing on marginal soils. Nigeria is the world’s
largest producer of cassava.
Although Nigeria’s cassava is being processed to local foods,
its greater potential lies in its being processed to
(intermediate) industrial products as to enable processors
access higher value markets.
Glucose syrup production from cassava can be subdivided into the
following process areas of liquefaction, saccharification, and
purification. Glucose is produced commercially via the enzymatic
process of Starch. Starch is produced from various raw materials
like maize, cassava/tapioca roots, potatoes, wheat, rice etc.
The establishment of a process for conversion of cassava starch
to glucose syrup would enhance the local capability of glucose
syrup production.
Glucose Syrup is an important sweetener in the food,
confectionery and pharmaceutical industries. Currently, local
production cannot meet the demand, hence, the local requirement
is being met through importation.
Annual demand for sugar in Nigeria is estimated at 3.5 million
tonnes per annum but only 2.4 million tonnes is produced locally
while an annual demand of 170,000 tons exists for high fructose
syrup and 60,000 tons/year for glucose syrup indicating a large
for glucose syrup in Nigeria.
Main glucose syrup production machine
Starch slurry will be pumped into the hydroclyone groups for
purifying and concentrating, desanding etc. After that, we can
get pure starch milk.
Starch
milk after concentration is sent to a mixing tank, and then
starch can use two levels of de-sander expel sand, the sand
collected uses butterfly valve to eject.
At this time the starches with 12-14 level cyclone stand to
clean, refined. Refined unit automatic. Work and is equipped
with the necessary instruments. Starch slurry concentration
after the refined is 35-40%, after this, in fact, the liquid
starch can be used for glucose syrup production in nigeria
directly, but to increase the storage time, better dewater and
drying to get the final starch.
The drying system is suspension air dry, its characteristic is
the product of dry and hot air evenly mixed, suspended airflow
drying efficiency is very high, even the product particle size
distribution is wide.
After drying the product with high efficiency cyclone to
collect, with a low speed screw conveyor discharging. The air
through the filter with saturated steam heating and through the
fan into the dryer, drying machine of finished with pneumatic
conveyor or screw conveyor to cool it. Cooling dry starch
collected with two stage cyclone separator and screw conveyor
sent to the sieving machine, packaging warehousing after
screening. The whole cassava starch processing plant completed
for glucose syrup production in nigeria, then you can get pure
cassava starch.
Glucose syrup production plant
The seoncond part of glucose syrup production in nigeria is
using casasva starch as raw material:
Mixing
the cassava starch with warm water, or using the starch slurry
before dewatering, either is ok. Afer continuous spray
liquefaction, mainly used to convert the starch content inside
the rice flour to make it orginal syrup. Then Filtration
section, It will be used to separate the protein or gluten, the
gluten will be the best additives for animal feed, By adding the
saccharification enzyme, which will transfer the orginal syrup
into glucose syrup, but at this time, the syrup is colored and
with impurities. So, we need to remove color by filter press
with active carbon. After that, we shall remove the active
carbon and impurtities, finally evaporation, processors can get
the final glucose syrup with required density.
Get our Practical Guide on How to make Glucose Syrub from
Cassava Tubers in Nigeria. This report is to examine the
financial viability or otherwise of establishing a liquid
glucose syrup production and packaging plant in Nigeria using
raw cassava tubers as the raw materials.
The production capacity of the proposed plant is ten (10) tons
of liquid glucose syrup (food grade, DE 85) per day of three (3)
shifts of eight (8) hours each working at 80% of the installed
capacity in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth year of
operations respectively. An Input output ratio of 4:1 was
assumed for raw cassava tubers to starch and 1:1 for starch to
glucose syrup. The finished products would be packaged in three
hundred kilogramme (300 kg) plastic containers /drum.
