How To Start Cassava Farming Business In
Nigeria
Cassava is one of the easiest crops to cultivate as it does not
require sophisticated environmental conditions. Cassava is very
much adaptive to climate change as it can resist high
temperature, drought. Cassava grows well on all types of soil
with an exception of heavy or saturated soil. Though it gives
preference to light, well drained and deep soil rich in organic
nutrients
Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of cassava, while
Thailand is the largest exporter of cassava with most of it
going to Europe. In 2017, Nigeria produced 59 million tons
making about 20% of global world production. Besides, it exports
about 3.2 million tons annually and earned $136 million in 2013.
Planting
Of Cassava...
Planting should be at a density of between 6,000 and 10,000
plants per hectare or with a spacing of between 1.5 x 1 m or 1 x
1 m for single cultivation and 2 x 2 m with intercropping, or
2,500 plants per hectare.
Cassava should be combined with other crops to improve
agricultural profitability and soil quality. Because of the
nutrients they release into the soil, legume species such as
cowpea, beans and groundnut are particularly suitable. Cassava
can also be combined with maize.
Harvesting
Of Cassava Tubers
After about 12 months of planting, the cassava is ready for
harvest in some varieties, though some are early like 10 months.
The dry season is the best time to harvest cassava because the
tubers are rich in starch at that time, drying is easy and the
products can be easily processed and preserved. The yield varies
from 20 to 30 tonnes per hectare for local varieties and from 25
to 70 tonnes per hectare for improved varieties.
Organic
fertilizer, like farmyard manure, is recommended for the
production of tubers. When preparing the soil for planting, add
chicken litter or any other animal manure at a rate of 10 tonnes
per hectare, or 15 or 20 tonnes per hectare if the soil is
depleted.
With good agricultural practices and strict adherence to the
guidelines above, your cassava farm can yield up to 25 tonnes
per hectare.
Cassava
can be processed into a number of products such as starch,
flour, chips, ethanol and glucose syrup, and bread to name a
few. These products are all in high demand locally and also have
significant export possibilities. These therefore, place a lot
of raw cash in the hands of anyone who goes into cassava farming
right now.

In recent years, Nigeria’s cassava processing industry has
witnessed a positive shift towards value addition and product
innovation. Processors are exploring new product lines such as
cassava chips, snacks, beverages, and cassava flour for
industrial usage. These innovations not only enhance the cassava
supply chain but also open up exciting new market prospects,
both locally and internationally
Export
Trade: The export market for cassava and its derivatives
presents a lucrative opportunity. Nigeria’s position as a major
cassava producer can be leveraged to tap into international
markets. By meeting quality standards, complying with regulatory
requirements, and fostering strong trade relationships, Nigerian
cassava products can gain a competitive edge globally. Exploring
opportunities in regional markets within Africa and beyond, such
as Europe and Asia, can lead to increased export earnings and
foreign exchange inflows.
Value
Addition and Processing: Investing in modern processing
technologies, equipment, and infrastructure can elevate the
quality, diversity, and marketability of cassava products.
Developing value-added products like cassava flour, starch,
chips, ethanol, and animal feed can unlock significant economic
potential and cater to evolving consumer preferences.
