Typically, a cane craftsman will use twist and weave techniques to actualise his design through artistic expression or design, such as; line, shape, form, colour, and weave a chair, settee, swing, shelf, basket, or flower vase, table, and many more.

With the cost of purchasing quality leather and wooden chairs on the high side, the use of cane furniture has become an alternative for many Nigerians. This in turn has increased the demand for it, thereby creating jobs for many young ones.

Unlike some small scale businesses, starting a cane weaving business is not as difficult as one may think. With as little as N 400, 000 or N500, 000, an interested person could begin the business and grow it to a multi-million naira business.

As one of the jobs that require skilful and constant practice, the business has become an employer of labour in recent times and many who are into it either inherited it from their parents or went through vocational training to be able to do it.

There is huge potential in the cane weaving business. There is a sizable market for cane-weaving goods in the country, hotels, restaurants, government, and foreigners all use the product

it is important to be apprenticed because you need to know how to use a knife in the work, how to smooth the cane, and techniques to prepare the material.

Materials: The major material used in this business,  is the cane itself, which is sourced from Warri in Delta State and some from the Ajah area of Lagos.

Tools : The tools are simply a hammer, file, drawknife, nails, inches, a pair of gloves, a saw, and a work cloth. The materials are available locally and are affordable. All an interested person needs to do is undergo a six-month or longer apprenticeship with one of the known hands in the business.

The production and export of cane weaving materials is a thriving industry that has gained significant attention due to the increasing demand for eco-friendly products.

Cane, which is derived from the stem of bamboo plants, is a versatile material that can be woven into various shapes and sizes to create beautiful and functional products, such as; baskets, mats, chairs, and even home decor items. The process of cane weaving involves harvesting the cane stems, processing them to remove any unwanted parts, and then weaving them together using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

The finished products are not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and long-lasting. With the rise in popularity of sustainable living practices globally, there has been a growing interest in using natural materials such as cane for everyday use.

As a result, the demand for cane weaving materials has increased significantly in recent years, making it a profitable business venture for many countries that have access to this resource. Exporting these materials provides an opportunity for local communities to generate income while showcasing their unique craftsmanship on a global scale.

This shows that Nigeria has all it takes to become a big exporter of rattan products not only in Africa but the world at large, thereby earning more foreign exchange.

At the cane village located under the bridge of Maryland, in Lagos, it is a beautiful sight to behold the various forms cane wood can take when made into furniture. There, a visitor can find on display different forms of household items including chairs, tables, baskets, baby cots, wine carriers, flower vases and flower pots. The various displays of the beautifully crafted products made from canes are expressions of the rich African culture and heritage. Apart from the lovely artistic designs, the uses of these cane products are quiet numerous.

“They come in bundles from suppliers from Edo, Delta, Rivers and Epe in Lagos and their prices range from N3,000  to N5,000  per bundle, depending on the size of the canes, A set of full upholstery chairs, will go for N300,000  to N500,000  while half upholstery go for N80,000 .

The canes, are of two types: the normal cane and willow cane. The willow type of cane, when heated using a gas burner can be bent into different kinds of designs and shapes which it cannot naturally do, both the normal cane and the willow cane are used together in crafting or carving.

You can use both wood and cane. The wood is used to construct the skeleton or frames of chairs and tables while the canes are used to weave

Most of what they produce is gotten from catalogues and furniture magazines. They select the designs and practice them until they are perfectly done. The  business entails a lot of hard work and division of labour.
